View to the North of Bathtub BeachStuart, FL - Bathtub Beach is open to the public once again but it isn’t back to full capacity just yet and probably won’t be for quite a while.  Over the weekend I took my family up to Bathtub Beach for a nice family day and for the most part was pleasantly surprised.  The thing that drew people to the beach in the first place, Bathtub Reef is still doing a great job keeping the beach nice and calm even at high tide.  My daughter is usually scared of the waves at Stuart beach (she’s only 16 months old!) but at Bathtub she was laughing and giggling in the water.

The difference is in the waves, which at Bathtub is little more than a ripple on the water.  If you are a surfer, this is not the place for you.  But if you have a family, particularly with small children or enjoy snorkeling there isn’t a better beach anywhere in driving distance!

The beach itself is narrow with the erosion and the parking is very limited for now but it actually made for a nice balance.  The limited parking helped offset the limited beach area and kept the beach from getting overcrowded.  Though it may take you some time to find a parking spot on the weekends.  The water was very calm and clear and you could clearly see anything under the water as far as obstructions.  Just in case, there was always a lifeguard close at hand with adequate equipment to get to any swimmer in distress quickly.  No, no one was in distress on my trip but I did see guards patrolling on four wheelers and kayaks.

The water is a little deeper than I remember but it was high tide and the deepest part of the beach was almost midpoint between the shore and the reef itself, with either end of the spectrum being only four or five feet deep.  Toward the middle it probably got to around six feet.

Congressional Candidate Endorses Flowway, Other Positions Requested by Rivers Coalition.

Hal Valeche, Republican candidate for Congress serving this district, officially endorses the flowway concept to move water south from Lake Okeechobee instead of east and west to the degraded estuaries.

Valeche presented his position in a paper provided to the Rivers Coalition. The Coalition requests written positions on the river issue from other candidates, including Republicans Gayle Harrell and Tom Rooney as well as incumbent Democrat Tim Mahoney.

g a slogan of “Val-a-shay for Flowway,” Valeche said a southern outlet such as Plan Six is vital to provide sheetflow to the Everglades, protect the estuaries from damaging discharges and stop immense losses of water to the oceans. His paper states:

“The damage done to the St. Lucie Estuary as a result of large fresh water releases from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie Canal can possibly be reversed, but only if we act promptly and decisively. Although many of the projects authorized in CERP and the IRL plan will be helpful once they are finally funded and accomplished, I think we must go beyond CERP to rescue this one-of-a-kind asset.”

Creation of a south outlet also has attracted support from several candidates for other offices.

And State Rep. Will Snyder stated at last month’s RC meeting that any speculated damages caused by water moved south would still be little compared to the problems caused in wet years when hundreds of billions of gallons of polluted and turbid fresh water drowns out estuarine life in the St. Lucie River

‘Saving Our St. Lucie Estuary” DVD Ready for Public Viewings!

The public is invited to see a completed eight-minute DVD at the coming Rivers Coalition meeting at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26.

“Saving Our St. Lucie Estuary” is a hard-hitting documentary that focuses on damages to the estuary caused by discharges from Lake Okeechobee and what can be done to stop them from inundating the waters in wet years.
Copies of the DVD are available for showing to RC member groups and civic organizations. The Rivers Coalition Defense Fund also intends to show the presentation to as many government officials as possible.

The showing calls for increased citizen support of the campaign to stop the discharges, which includes a current lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and advocacy on local, state and federal levels.

Stuart, FL - Bathtub Beach is FINALLY going to be re-opened to the public this coming Monday.  Everyone had been expecting the beach to open for about a week now but delays in hiring life guards for the beach have kept it closed until now.  According to a story I read over at TCPalm, there are still waiting for up to four more lifeguards that haven’t responded to the job offers they made them but are planning to open Monday anyway.

The city has cleaned up the parking lot and the bathrooms in preparation for the re-opening but warns there are still under water dangers that were not there the last time you went!  Be cautious the first time you go remembering there are things there you can’t necessarily see, like tree stumps!

Overall it should be a fun and safe place to go to the beach with the Bathtub Reef still providing a barrier from the waves making it a calm place to enjoy a dip or a cool place to go snorkel.  If you do decide to snorkel or just venture out to the reef itself, PLEASE keep in mind that it’s a living reef and is very fragile to the touch.  Look but don’t touch!  Enjoy!
